I provide consultation services for young children and their families seeking early intensive behavioral intervention in Johnson County, eastern Douglas County, and northern Miami County in Kansas. I am willing to travel farther, depending on whether or not I have other clients in the area or close to the area I am requested. I am also available for help with Individual Education Plans and consulting with local school districts.
Typically, an ideal home program looks like this:
The majority of hours spent working with the child are done by trained family members and trained in-home therapists.
As a consultant, providing training to family and staff and curriculum to meet the needs of the child, I prefer (but do not require) to work with a family who is running an intensive program, 25-40 hours per week. In order to maximize the programs and procedures used to implement the programs, ideally I would work the following hours:
Time for me to work one on one with the child: 1.5-3 hours per week
Time for me to “overlap”/train team members during their shifts with the child: 4-8 hours per month
Full Team meetings: 2 hours per week
Meeting with the Senior Therapist and/or parent: 2 hours per week
Time for me to work in vivo with the client’s family: These hours, too may also vary, depending on whether or not a senior therapist is involved in the program and if he/she can take this responsibility on. These hours are meant to ensure that the child is living in a "therapeutic environment" and family members will be able to capitalize on teaching moments throughout the day, not just during "therapy".
A senior therapist would ideally work the following hours:
Meet with the consultant: 2 hours per week
Teaching sessions: 7-10 hours per week (including probing sessions)
Staff and parent overlaps: 2-4 hours per week
Data, graphing, and typing up program updates: 2-4 hours per week
In this area, senior therapists are not typically available. If a senior therapist with experience is not available, families can hire an experienced therapist that I can train to be a lead therapist. If no senior therapist exists on the team, the consultant (I) and the parents will take over those responsibilities, although, obviously, the distribution of hours would change.
This is negotiable! Every child and family is different. My time is normally altered when a strong, dependable lead therapist is also on the team. I do know that each family and team must work around time (personal, family, school, etc.) and finances when constructing an early intervention program. Understanding that the time element may vary slightly due to needs of the child, training needs of the team and family, and at the request of the client/family, I will work to maintain the effectiveness and integrity of the program.
